Asked by reporters from Interfax Russia about the progress of the US talks and whether Witkoff is expected to return this week, Ushakov said, “We’re waiting,” without providing any details about the specific topics on the agenda or whether the talks would involve Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This will be Witkoff’s fourth visit to Russia, his most recent being a four-hour meeting with Putin in St. Petersburg on April 11. Later, Witkoff stated that the topic of the five regions Russia claimed to have annexed – Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia – was discussed during talks on settling the war in Ukraine.
On Wednesday, April 23, US officials will meet with Ukrainian, British and French officials to discuss ways to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, his representatives will be pressing for an unconditional ceasefire with Russia as the first step towards a final peace agreement.
“Already this Wednesday, our representatives will be working in London. Ukraine, with the United Kingdom, France, and the United States – we are ready to move forward as constructively as possible,” Zelensky wrote on social media on Monday after a call with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
