The Ukrainian Air Force has said it captured a group of Russian soldiers in Russia’s eastern Kursk region, claiming the troops surrendered after they were subject to inhumane treatment by their own commanders.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Russian soldiers surrendered “because abuse in units is worse than captivity.”

“In their units on the territory of the Russian Federation, they were subjected to inhumane treatment, psychological pressure and threats,” the Ukrainian forces said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

The Russian troops were provided medical and psychological assistance, the Ukrainian Air Force added. They may potentially be included in future prisoner exchanges for Ukrainian troops held in Russian captivity.

The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said on May 25 that during operations in the Kursk region, Ukrainian forces had captured 971 Russian military personnel.

Russia said in late April that it had ejected Ukrainian troops from Kursk region, ending the biggest incursion into Russian territory since World War Two.

Just over two years after Russia’s 2022 invasion, Ukraine on August 6 launched its boldest attack, smashing through the Russian border into the Kursk region, supported by swarms of drones and heavy Western weaponry.
