A Russian Su-30SM fighter aircraft reportedly crashed near Zmiiniy (Snake) Island, with aircraft wreckage found without its pilots, the Ukrainian Navy said.

Zmiinyi Island, recently visited by Lt. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate (HUR), is one of the key sites reclaimed from Russian occupation during successful Ukrainian operations.

According to a statement on Telegram, Ukrainian Navy intelligence intercepted Russian radio communications reporting the loss of contact with the Su-30SM during a mission southeast of Zmiiniy Island.

“The aircraft probably crashed for unknown reasons,” the report stated.

Russian forces launched a search and rescue operation. Wreckage was located at sea, but the pilots were not found.

The pro-Kremlin Telegram channel Fighterbomber indirectly confirmed the loss by posting a black-and-white photo of a Su-30 fighter with the caption: “...And every time, say goodbye forever. When you go for a moment…”

The monitoring channel Crimean Wind reported the downed jet was based at the Saki or Belbek airfields in occupied Crimea. Meanwhile, the Military Informer Russian Telegram channel said it belonged to the Black Sea Fleet’s naval aviation.

The Su-30SM (NATO: “Flanker-H”) is a 4+ generation multirole fighter developed by Russia’s Irkut Corporation. Equipped with thrust-vectoring engines, a phased-array radar, and advanced avionics, it is capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

The French president said the vessel was intercepted while allegedly violating international maritime law and pledged continued action against Russia’s sanctions evasion network.

The plane can carry up to 8,000 kg (17,637 pounds) of weapons, including guided missiles and bombs, and is armed with a 30mm GSh-30-1 autocannon.

It features in-flight refueling capability, SAP-518 electronic warfare pods for jamming and countermeasures, a maximum speed of 1,850 km/h at high altitude (limited to Mach 1.75 due to the SM variant’s canards), a service ceiling of 56,800 feet (17,300 m), a combat radius of 1,500 km at high altitude, or 500 km at low altitude, and a maximum take-off weight of 34,500 kg.

According to the investigative group InformNapalm, Russia has around 130 Su-30SM fighters in service. Each aircraft costs roughly $50 million.

Previously, Ukrainian drones from the Security Service’s (SBU) elite “A” Special Operations Center struck Russia’s Saky airfield in occupied Crimea on Aug.4, reportedly destroying a combat aircraft and causing millions in damage.

According to the SBU’s report, the strike completely destroyed a Su-30SM fighter and severely damaged another. Three Su-24 bombers were also hit, along with an ammunition depot on the base.
