Polish authorities have detained a Ukrainian citizen wanted by Germany in connection with the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions, Polish media RMF FM reported Tuesday, Sept. 30.
The man, identified as “Volodymyr Z.,” is a diving instructor whom German investigators allege sailed from Rostock to the Baltic Sea in September 2022, dove to the seabed and planted explosives on the undersea gas pipelines.

The blasts severely damaged Nord Stream 1 and 2, cutting energy flows from Russia to Europe and triggering one of the continent’s most contentious sabotage probes in decades.
Prosecutors in Karlsruhe had issued a European arrest warrant for Volodymyr Z. in June 2024. Despite the warrant, Polish authorities initially did not take him into custody.
RMF FM said he had been living near Warsaw until his recent arrest. There was no immediate comment from Polish or German prosecutors on the reported detention.
Nord Stream, if functioning, would have enabled Russian gas to reach markets in Western Europe – prior to the full-scale invasion, Germany sourced half of its gas from Russia, as per Reuters.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has denied that he or his government had any knowledge of the attacks.
