Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) said on Tuesday that its operatives carried out a cross-border attack that killed a senior officer of Russia’s Rosgvardiya (National Guard ) and two other servicemen in the Stavropol region, that borders the North Caucasus.

HUR, said the Sept. 27 attack was conducted in coordination with the Caucasus Liberation Movement, a group opposing Moscow’s control over the region.

According to the statement, the ambush took place near the settlement of Tambukan in Stavropol Krai, about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) southeast of Moscow and 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of the border with Georgia.

HUR said a Rosgvardiya lieutenant colonel, identified as the commander of the “Avangard” special unit was killed along with his driver and assistant.

The (17th) Separate Special Unit Avangard is a Russian special-purpose unit within the Rosgvardiya, that was formed in 1998 and is based near Mineralnye Vody , 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of the site of the attack.

“The group of Russian servicemen was heading toward a training ground but never arrived,” HUR said, releasing video footage. The agency did not provide further details on how the strike was carried out.

There was no immediate comment from Russian authorities on the reported incident, and the claims could not be independently verified.
