Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) said it has detained a Russian military intelligence agent who was preparing to blow up a major gas pipeline in eastern Ukraine.

The SBU said the operation prevented potential power and heating outages for households in the Kharkiv and Poltava regions.

Investigators said the suspect, an unemployed man from Kharkiv, was recruited after posting anti-Ukrainian comments on Telegram. He was contacted by a fighter from the so-called “DPR special forces,” who works with Russia’s military intelligence, known as the GRU.

Under their instructions, the man built an improvised explosive device in a secret workshop at his parents’ home in the Berestynskyi district. SBU agents monitored his activities and arrested him while he was assembling the bomb.

The suspect has been charged with preparing a terrorist act and may face additional charges of treason. He is being held without bail and could face life in prison with property confiscation.

The operation was carried out by SBU officers in Kharkiv region with oversight from the regional prosecutor’s office.
