Russian forces launched a nighttime missile attack on the town of Balakliya in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region early Monday, killing at least three people and injuring 13, local officials said.

In Balakliya, the State Emergency Service said the missiles hit a densely populated residential area. A private home, balconies in several apartment blocks and multiple cars caught fire.

Nine-story and five-story apartment buildings and a kindergarten were also damaged. Emergency crews quickly extinguished the flames.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said seven apartment buildings and a kindergarten were damaged in the first strike. A second missile hit the area again, damaging two more nine-story buildings.

Among the injured in Balakliya are four children, including two aged 14 and 12. A 61-year-old man was also hospitalized.

The strike came just one night after Russian forces launched waves of drone, missile and artillery attacks across Ukraine from Saturday into Sunday, killing four civilians and injuring dozens, Ukrainian officials said.

Ukraine’s Air Defense Forces intercepted most of the airborne weapons, shooting down 139 of 176 drones aimed at 14 locations.

The strikes targeted residential areas, energy facilities, and social infrastructure from Kherson in the south to Kharkiv and Sumy in the north east. Authorities reported fires, damage to homes and businesses, and large-scale evacuations in several frontline regions.
