Paris knows the agony of seeing its soul on fire.

When Notre-Dame’s spire collapsed in 2019, the world wept for a masterpiece of the human spirit. France mourned, rallied, rebuilt and restored one of the great symbols of European civilization.

On Monday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot compared Russia’s strike on the Lavra to bombing Notre-Dame or Saint-Denis, describing Vladimir Putin’s war for what it truly is: a colonial war against Ukraine.

“In Ukraine, once again last night, Vladimir Putin’s Russia showed the extent of its cruelty by massively striking the capital, Kyiv, causing extremely severe damage to the Dormition Cathedral within the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which for us, the French, is the equivalent of bombing Notre-Dame or Saint-Denis,” Barrot said.

He noted that the initial death toll of nine – which later rose to 11 – demonstrated that Putin represents a direct obstacle to a peace.

Russia claimed the damage was caused by a US-made Patriot air-defense missile. Ukraine’s Security Service said fragments of a Russian Geran-2 kamikaze drone were found at the site.

Beyond the forensic details lies a larger truth: Russia has systematically targeted the foundations of Ukrainian existence – its homes, schools, museums, churches and historic landmarks.

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is not just another religious complex. Known as the Monastery of the Caves, it is one of the most important spiritual and cultural sites in Eastern Orthodoxy.

Zelensky Says Putin Rejected G7 Peace Talks Offer

Zelensky said Ukraine proposed G7-linked talks with Putin to discuss ending the war, but Moscow refused to engage. Kyiv is now considering a US-based format with Trump.

For France, Notre-Dame was never only about architecture. It was history breathing through stone. The same is true of the Lavra for Ukraine.

When Russia strikes such a place, it is trying to tell Ukrainians that nothing is safe. It seeks not only to conquer territory, but to erase meaning itself.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as one of Russia’s gravest crimes against Christian culture. A regime that frequently claims to defend Christian civilization has now set fire to one of the most important Orthodox sites in the world.

The fire at the Dormition Cathedral was extinguished by morning, but the damage may not be over. Officials warned that the water used to put out the blaze could further harm priceless frescoes and religious artifacts inside.

Yet the Lavra will survive.

Notre-Dame rose again because France refused to let fire have the final word.

Kyiv will do the same.

The Lavra will be repaired, and its bells will ring again.

But the world must never forget who did this to Ukraine’s spiritual jewel.
