A man armed with a gun took several people hostage inside a hair salon in southern Ukraine’s Odesa before police peacefully resolved the standoff.

The incident took place in the Khadzhybeyskyi district on Wednesday morning after the man entered the salon and locked himself inside with several other people, according to National Police spokesperson Yuliia Hirdvilis.

Patrol police, investigators, and special forces officers were dispatched to the scene, while negotiators began communicating with the suspect.

Police later said the man had not made any threats toward the people inside the salon, despite refusing to open the door.

The standoff ended after officers managed to open the premises, with no one injured.

Police are now questioning the man, with medical examinations planned.

Previous terrorist attack

The incident comes less than three months after a deadly shooting in Kyiv on April 18.

According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the 58-year-old attacker was a Russian-born man who had lived for many years in Ukraine’s Donetsk region.

The gunman killed six people, including one hostage inside a Velmart supermarket, before being fatally shot by KORD special forces officers.

Fourteen people were reported injured, including a 12-year-old boy whose parents were among those killed. The child was treated for a gunshot wound.

According to Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and the Prosecutor General’s Office, the act has been classified as terrorism.
