A Russian drone struck the locomotive of a passenger train in the Dnipropetrovsk region on Friday, July 24, after monitoring services detected the threat.
No casualties were reported, as both railway workers and passengers were evacuated before the strike hit the carriages. According to Ukrainian Railways, Ukrzaliznytsia, the drone struck the locomotive directly, completely destroying it.

“Our colleagues are currently working to ensure passengers can continue their journey along the safest possible route and reach their stations with minimal delay,” Ukrzaliznytsia said in its statement.
Part of a broader wave of strikes
The strike is the latest in a series of Russian drone attacks on rail infrastructure in the Dnipropetrovsk region throughout the recent months, as railway remains a consistent target. Ukrzaliznytsia has repeatedly reported Russian strikes on both passenger and freight rail infrastructure across frontline and rear regions throughout the year.
Similar incidents happened in June and July, with a Russian drone striking a passenger train in the Zaporizhzhia region on July 19. Railway crews managed to stop the trains and evacuate passengers and the crew just in time to avoid casualties.
The drone strike followed an unprecedented barrage launched at the Ukrainian capital on the same day, which killed at least one person and injured 17 across multiple districts, as Russia launched approximately 40 ballistic missiles.

An earlier attack on June 12, in which Russian armed forces targeted civilian infrastructure nationwide, killed a railway worker in the Sumy region and injured another employee. Separate strikes damaged a logistic terminal in Zaporizhzhia and a solar energy facility in the Odesa region.
However, not all such attacks have ended without civilian harm. In March, RBC-Ukraine reported that a Russian drone struck a moving commuter train carriage in the Kryvyi Rih district, killing one person and injuring ten passengers.
The railway strike comes as Russia had already struck Zaporizhzhia with 5 aerial bombs (KABs) on Thursday, July 23, injuring at least 25 people, including six children and a three-month-old baby.
The United Nation’s (UN) Human Rights Monitoring Mission (HRMMU) reported that Zaporizhzhia had 23 people killed and 229 injured in June, while Kherson saw 18 killed and 236 injured, and Dnipro reported 25 killed and 77 injured. These figures placed the three regions above the rest of Ukraine, marking the month of June as the deadliest month, with the highest civilian death toll in the whole year of 2026.
