In his final call as British prime minister, Boris Johnson assured President Volodymyr Zelensky that Ukraine can and will defeat Russia.

Liz Truss succeeded Johnson as the head of the Conservative Party on Monday, with Johnson promising to keep a close connection with Zelensky even after he steps down from his position.

“The Prime Minister told President Zelensky it had been a privilege to work with him and support him, and the leaders agreed to stay in close touch as friends,” said a Downing Street spokesperson.

Following the phone call, Zelensky tweeted: “On behalf of all people, I thanked him for his personal bravery, principles & a major contribution to countering RF’s aggression.”

“I look forward to cooperation with a great friend of [Ukraine] in a new status,” he added.

Since the commencement of Russia’s brutal invasion in February, Boris Johnson has been one of the Ukraine’s most vocal supporters. Earlier this year he made history by becoming the first head of state from outside the region to address the Ukrainian parliament.

The UK government has provided Ukraine with a range of economic, humanitarian, and defensive military support measures totalling billions of pounds.

One of the major accomplishments of his premiership, according to Mr. Johnson’s resignation speech a few months ago, was the UK’s support for Ukraine.

“Let me say now, to the people of Ukraine, that I know that we in the UK will continue to back your fight for freedom for as long as it takes,” Mr Johnson stated.
