Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday renewed his appeals for fresh air defence systems on a visit to Lithuania, as his war-torn country faced ramped-up Russian bombardments of major cities.

The visit, during which Ukraine signed a 10-year bilateral security deal with Latvia, comes after Moscow launched a barrage of aerial attacks, targeting energy facilities across Ukraine.

Zelensky told reporters that securing more air defences was "the priority number one" for Kyiv.

"It is our biggest challenge for today, and you know that we've been attacked today this night, this early morning. Again, Kharkiv, again, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv region, a lot of our regions," Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian leader arrived in Lithuania, one of Kyiv's staunchest allies, to hold talks with Central and Eastern European leaders on new aid for his country amid faltering Western military support.

"The main thing now is to do everything to strengthen our air defence, to meet the urgent needs of the defence forces of Ukraine, as well as to consolidate international support," Zelensky said on social media upon arrival.

Zelensky was speaking ahead of talks with his Lithuanian counterpart Gitanas Nauseda, focused primarily on Ukraine's needs.

Nauseda said that Lithuania "is really committed to do the best" to provide Ukraine with the necessary equipment.

Vilnius added that a new package of anti-drone systems, electricity generators and folding beds had reached Ukraine on Thursday.

The situation has been worsening under Russian bombardment in Kharkiv, which lies near the Russian border and is Ukraine's second largest city.

Zelensky also announced that he and his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkevics had signed "a bilateral security agreement between Ukraine and Latvia".

"It envisages Latvia's annual military support for Ukraine at 0.25% of GDP," he posted on X.

"Latvia also made a 10-year commitment to assist Ukraine with cyberdefence, demining and unmanned technologies, as well as support for Ukraine's EU and NATO accession."

Since the start of the Russian invasion, Zelensky has been a rare guest abroad, but he has now visited Lithuania three times since Moscow's assault in 2022.

He was in Vilnius for a NATO summit last July, and visited Lithuania in January to ask Western partners for more military aid.

The leaders of the former Russia oppressed nations that finally slipped out from under its' cold grip get it. The Ukraine supporters coming to this site for important war coverage get it. Defeating russia should be democratic nations number one priority right now.

NO democracy = NO benefits associated with having democracy. Fight for it now or risk losing it. Fail to decisively stop putins' invasion now, and allies guarantee his stated invasions of the future. Lose Ukraine and its neighbours might as well pack their away bags for a stint as a refugee or in an autocrats re-education camp / prison. Don't expect either option to be fun.

If only the other democratic allied leaders would get the importance of this war...and would finally do more. It seems many's response to date has been half assed as though they think it is far away fiction. Frankly this is also western media's fault for focusing on absolute meaningless crap, while barely mentioning this critical war. Why is investigative journalism no longer part of mainstream media in the west? Why do they instead focus only own entertainers, sports, pets and selling products?

A society that raises stupid people will fail to vet their election choices and pick weak or unethical leaders selling them lies to stay in power. Once in power the only leverage it for their own self gain and doing little of value..often even of great national security harm.
