“I’m not happy about what’s going on” in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump told a press gathering in the White House on Monday, complaining that the Russians are “bombing like crazy right now” despite the administration’s efforts to reach a ceasefire in the 37-month-long full-scale invasion.

Starting late last week, Moscow’s forces have been launching aerial attacks on various civilian targets in cities around Ukraine, including the capital, killing more than two dozen people, including children, and wounding more than 100 others in the span of just a few days.

On Friday night, Russian troops carried out ballistic missile strikes on a residential area of Kryvyi Rih, killing 20, including nine children, in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown. More than 60 others were injured in those attacks. More than 33 remain in the hospital.

There was no sign of a let-up in attacks over the weekend or Monday.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine said that air defense units on Sunday spotted nine Kh-101 or Kh-55SM bomber-launched cruise missiles, eight sea-launched Kalibr missiles, six Iskander-M ballistic missiles, and 132 drones of various types entering Ukrainian airspace. The strike’s Russian navy component, reported as eight to 12 Kalibr cruise missiles, was launched by warships operating in the eastern Black Sea offshore of Russia’s Krasnodar region.

Putin Responds to Zelensky’s Letter, Says Meeting Would Be Pointless

Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 5, Vladimir Putin said he had read Zelensky’s open letter that morning. He addressed comments about his age and time in office, criticized Ukraine’s election policy, and claimed Zelensky had requested a meeting through a Russian businessman. Putin said he had never refused talks but questioned the purpose of such a meeting and argued it would primarily benefit Ukraine.

While Trump said the two sides were “close to an agreement” to pause the hostilities, Kremlin strongman Vladimir Putin has noted that he has little interest in signing off on a ceasefire under the current terms.

“We’d like them to stop. I don’t like the bombing,” Trump said politely on Sunday.

A team from Kyiv will travel to the White House next week to discuss a new draft deal of an agreement on Ukraine’s natural resources, including fossil fuels and critical industrial metals.

Trump has not had a call with Putin since March 18.

“So we’re meeting with Russia, we’re meeting with Ukraine, and we’re getting sort of close, but I’m not happy with all the bombing that’s going in the last week or so,” he said on Monday. “It’s a horrible thing.”

During his presidential campaign in 2024, Trump promised many times he would end Russia’s war in Ukraine “within 24 hours, believe me.” He took office on January 20.
