Frankenstein Weapon: Ukraine’s New ‘Dragon H73’ Blends Soviet Missiles With American Humvee

Ukrainian forces have unveiled a domestically produced, improvised mobile air defense system that mixes Cold War-era Soviet missiles with an American Humvee, calling it the Dragon H73.

The 3rd Separate Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced the creation of the weapon on its Facebook page, describing it as a powerful tool against drones and tactical aircraft.

“This mobile firearm is based on the first Humvee,” said the unit’s commander, known by the call sign ‘Shaman.’ “It’s designed to defeat both tactical aircraft and large drones such as Orlan or Shahed. We use it 24/7, day and night.”

The Dragon H73 is armed with a twin launcher carrying R-73 Soviet air-to-air missiles, originally developed in the 1980s for fighter jets. Since then, several countries have modified the missile for ground- and sea-based air defense.

In Ukraine’s version, the missile system has been mounted onto a Humvee chassis, creating a battlefield hybrid – a real-life “Frankenstein” weapon.

To train operators effectively, the brigade is using modern simulators that copy the exact controls and displays of the real system.

“New technology really helps with training now,” Shaman said. “Before, we didn’t have the chance to sit down, press the same buttons, and see the actual interface. Now, simulators let us practice everything like we’re inside the real vehicle.”
