Local authorities reported that the type of weapon used is still being verified, and damage assessments are ongoing.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack “brutal,” noting that one of the MLRS shells did not explode and pierced the wall of a ninth-floor apartment. According to him, this is clear evidence of Russia’s continued intention to wage war.

“Not a single day goes by without Russia striking Ukrainian cities and villages. Every day, we lose people to Russian terror,” Zelensky said.
The President emphasized that international pressure from the United States, Europe, and the global community is essential to force the Kremlin to halt its aggression. He thanked international partners for sanctions and military assistance, which help save Ukrainian lives.
The regional administration has declared Wednesday, June 4, a Day of Mourning in the Sumy municipal community in memory of the victims of the latest attack.
The strike on Sumy was just one in a series of attacks, as Russia continued its deliberate targeting of Ukrainian civilians – with drones hitting Chernihiv and Odesa overnight on June 3.
Just hours after the second round of talks between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey ended, Russia once again launched deadly attacks on Ukrainian civilians.
In the early hours of Tuesday, Russian drones attacked the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, causing widespread destruction. Fires broke out across the city, residential buildings were damaged, and four people were injured.

Chernihiv is located in northern Ukraine, approximately 70 kilometers (44 miles) from the Russian border.
Elsewhere, in Balakliia a town in the Kharkiv region, a Russian drone strike killed a worker at a local enterprise and injured another. The drones hit both the facility and an open area, igniting dry grass. Emergency services responded to the scene.
Drones were also launched toward Odesa, once again causing significant damage across the city.
“Another overnight Russian attack. Residential buildings, civilian infrastructure were damaged, and vehicles were burned. At this time, there are no reports of injuries,” Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov said.
