For the execution of Operation Spiderweb (Pavutyana), which resulted in the destruction of dozens of Russian strategic aircraft, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) deployed drones of its own design. Sources within the SBU told Kyiv Post that these UAVs are a unique development by the intelligence agency, incorporating advanced technologies.

“These drones are a unique innovation by the Security Service of Ukraine, equipped with cutting-edge technologies that allowed them to be remotely operated in real time from thousands of kilometers beyond Ukraine’s borders. They successfully bypassed enemy defenses and delivered precise strikes on strategic aviation targets,” an SBU source said.

According to the sources, the UAVs were not only developed but also manufactured directly by SBU engineers. They were specifically designed for deep operations in Russian rear areas and tailored to the characteristics of high-value targets.

This marks the first confirmation that Operation Spiderweb involved drones engineered entirely by the SBU, featuring advanced navigation systems, protection mechanisms, and capabilities for deep-strike missions.

On Sunday, June 1, an audacious long-distance operation mounted by Ukraine’s intelligence services attacked at least five airfields, in Russia’s Murmansk, Irkutsk, Ryazan, and Amur regions, where strategic bombers and surveillance aircraft were located. While the number of aircraft destroyed and damaged is still being debated – Kyiv has said it could be as many as 41 – this success has more than bloodied the Russian aerospace forces’ nose.

Russia is losing more than economic and human resources in this war. It is also losing sight of victory and running out of ideas about how to make Ukraine suffer.

Ukrainian FPV drones were launched from trucks parked near the airbases, according to intelligence sources and regional officials, damaging dozens of strategic aircraft used in daily bombing raids on Ukrainian cities, including long-range Tu-95 and Tu-22M3 bombers, as well as an A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft.

Earlier, sources within the SBU told Kyiv Post that the operation had been in the works for more than 18 months and was personally overseen by President Volodymyr Zelensky and executed by SBU chief Lt. Gen. Vasyl Malyuk and his team.

The drones were covertly transported into Russia and hidden beneath wooden houses mounted on trucks. When the time came, the drones were remotely released to strike the bombers on the ground.
