The US has lifted sanctions on Hungary’s Paks-2 nuclear plant project which involves Russia’s state energy giant Rosatom, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto reported on X.

“These politically motivated measures [the sanctions] were imposed by the Biden admin just before Donald Trump took office,” Szijjarto wrote. “Grateful to the Trump admin, as this project will guarantee our future energy supply”.

Four VVER-440 type reactor units are now operating at Hungary’s Paks Nuclear Power Plant near Budapest, originally built using a Soviet-era design. In December 2014, Rosatom signed a deal with Hungarian energy firm MVM to construct two additional units with VVER-1200 reactors, the Rosatom website says.

The project, managed by Rosatom, has faced numerous legal challenges and major delays in recent years. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has often clashed with European Union leaders over his close relationship with Russia, which provides most of Hungary’s energy imports, Bloomberg wrote.

The Biden administration had imposed sanctions on the construction of the Paks-2 nuclear power plant in Hungary just before Donald Trump’s return to the White House. This month, the new administration lifted these restrictions, allowing Russia to take part in the project.

“Construction of the major pieces of equipment for the Paks nuclear plant is proceeding in Russia and France,” Szijjarto said. “On site in Paks, construction can now proceed at a faster pace.”

Polls Open in Armenia’s Pivotal Election as Pashinyan Battles Pro-Russian Blocs

Armenia commenced voting for its 9th legislative parliament on Sunday morning, June 7, marking a critical test for incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Leading the polls with roughly 30% support, Pashinyan’s Civil Treaty party seeks a commanding majority to secure a final peace treaty with Azerbaijan and advance a diplomatic pivot toward the EU. Standing in opposition is a coalition of pro-Russian factions, primarily the “Strong Armenia” alliance led by billionaire Samvel Karapetyan.

Disputes with the EU over oil and gas purchases are likely to continue, despite the lifting of sanctions on the nuclear front, Szijjarto said.
