A Russian airstrike on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv injured at least 33 people, with Ukrainian prosecutors saying the attack may be the first use of newly developed UMPB-5 long-range guided bombs.

The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said two UMPB-5 guided bombs were likely launched from a Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber operating from near Stroitel, a settlement in Russia’s Belgorod region, about 100 km from the city.

The UMPB-5 is a new type of aerial bomb with a planning and guidance module, allowing it to be launched from long distances. If confirmed, this would mark the first documented use of the UMPB-5 in combat.

Spartak Borysenko, a spokesperson for the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, told Ukrainian media outlet Dumka that the bomb weighs around 250 kg and has a casing made from thicker metal than previously used Russian bombs. He added that the UMPB-5 causes significantly more damage due to its design.

Ukrainian officials have described the attack as part of a broader pattern of Russian strikes targeting civilian infrastructure and residential areas in Kharkiv. The city has been regularly shelled throughout the full-scale invasion that began in February 2022.

Civilian casualties

The bombs struck the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv around 11 a.m. local time on Thursday, damaging a civilian enterprise and igniting cars parked near a multi-storey apartment building. Officials stated that the explosions triggered a large fire and widespread destruction in the area.
