President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned a series of overnight Russian attacks on Tuesday morning, Aug 5, accusing Moscow of deliberately targeting civilians to terrorize frontline communities, and renewed calls for tougher sanctions against Russia.
In the town of Lozova, Kharkiv region, the Russians hit civilian infrastructure with more than 25 Shahed drones, Zelensky said in a Telegram post.

“The railway depot and station were damaged. One person was killed in the strikes – my condolences to their family and loved ones. Ten more people were injured, including two children. Everyone is receiving assistance,” Zelensky wrote.
Zelensky also reported that the Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, and Sumy regions came under fire the same night. In the village of Bilenke, in the Zaporizhzhia region, Russian forces directly targeted civilians with first-person-view (FPV) drones, Zelensky said: “Once again, the Russian army is hunting people in an attempt to intimidate frontline cities and communities.”
The president called for more sanctions against Russia and secondary sanctions against those helping Russia profit from oil.
“Stronger sanctions can work. That’s why pressure must be increased – this will undoubtedly contribute to peace,” he said.
Zelensky expressed gratitude to the US, European partners, G7 countries, and “everyone ready to apply the necessary pressure.”

“We are counting on meaningful, decisive steps,” he added.
The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that during the attack on Lozova, Russian forces launched more than 30 Geran-2/Shahed-type strike drones from 2:30 to 3 a.m.
The drone strikes damaged railway infrastructure, residential buildings, and an energy facility, sparking multiple fires across the city.
“One man was killed. Ten others were injured or suffered acute stress. Among the victims are a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy,” the statement said.
Emergency crews are continuing to clear the wreckage, and updated information is still being gathered.
Later in the morning, around 10 a.m., a separate Russian missile strike in the Sumy region caused more casualties.
According to the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Oleh Hryhorov, and the regional prosecutor’s office, a missile struck the Pischanskyi Starostat of the Sumy community, hitting an agricultural enterprise.
Emergency services are conducting search and rescue operations at the site.
Preliminary reports confirm that two employees were killed – a 54-year-old man and a 55-year-old man – and three others sustained injuries.
