Russia has cancelled its annual Russia Day concert on Moscow’s Red Square for the first time since the celebrations began in 2003.

According to the Russian outlet Msk1, the event, scheduled for June 12, has been quietly moved to the Mossovet Cultural Centre in eastern Moscow, while most of the star-studded lineup originally announced will no longer perform.

The concert, titled “The Strength of Russia Lies in the Unity of Its People,” was expected to feature patriotic singer Shaman alongside other Russian performers.

State broadcaster Rossiya 1 had also planned to air the “major festive concert” from Red Square on Friday evening.

Msk1 said the event had been relocated but gave no explanation for the change.

The cancellation comes weeks after Russian authorities scrapped the traditional display of military hardware during Moscow’s Victory Day parade for the first time since 2007. The Defense Ministry cited the “current operational situation,” while the Kremlin pointed to a Ukrainian “terrorist threat.”

The decisions have coincided with an increase in Ukrainian drone attacks targeting the Russian capital.
