Four Ukrainian sailors who were aboard a vessel detained by Iranian authorities in April have returned home from Iran, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said on Wednesday, June 24.

According to Tykhyi, the sailors were crew members of the container ship Epimonidas, one of several vessels detained by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this year.

The Foreign Ministry said the Department of Consular Service and Ukraine’s Embassy in Greece immediately established the identities of the four Ukrainian crew members and maintained contact with their families, the Greek shipowner and other parties involved.

Diplomatic efforts led to sailors’ return

The ministry said Ukrainian diplomats had worked for several months with all relevant institutions and stakeholders to facilitate the sailors’ return.

“We are pleased to report that these efforts have produced a positive result. Four Ukrainian citizens have already left Iran. They are now safe with their families,” Tykhyi said.

He added that the sailors’ health condition was satisfactory.

The Foreign Ministry also thanked partner countries, representatives of the shipping company and others involved in the effort.

“Ukraine does not abandon its people,” Tykhyi said.

The ministry did not provide additional details regarding the circumstances of the sailors’ departure from Iran.
