Governor reports civilian casualties and widespread damage
Earlier, Sumy Regional Military Administration head Oleh Hryhorov said Russian forces had carried out a massive attack using guided aerial bombs and drones, striking civilian infrastructure across the regional capital.
Hryhorov initially reported the death of a 79-year-old woman, whose body was found on the grounds of a heavily damaged home. He also said residential neighborhoods sustained significant damage and warned that civilians, including children, had been injured.
One of the guided bombs struck a central street of Sumy near an apartment building, a store and a roadway crowded with civilians, according to Hryhorov.
Rescue operation continues
Emergency services remain at the scene as authorities continue clearing debris and assessing the full extent of the destruction.
Officials warned that casualty figures could change as search and rescue operations continue.

Ukrainian officials say Russia has intensified strikes on border communities in an effort to terrorize civilians, damage infrastructure and stretch Ukraine’s air defense resources.
Earlier on Friday Russia carried out multiple attacks on Zaporizhzhia, striking an industrial enterprise with guided bombs and injuring civilians across various locations in the city. At least two men were killed and 17 people were injured, including an 11-year-old child, according to regional authorities. Two women were also hurt in an earlier, separate daytime attack on a city street. Authorities said the toll remained preliminary as emergency services continue assessing the damage.
On Wednesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of a massive Russian overnight strike, urging citizens to seek shelter whenever possible and heed air raid alerts.
Only hours later, Russia launched its overnight barrage of Kyiv, forcing 52,500 Ukrainian residents, including about 4,500 children, to shelter in the capital’s Metro system, marking the highest wartime use of the shelters.
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia launched 570 aerial weapons during the overnight assault. The barrage included 496 attack and decoy drones – including Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, Banderol and Parodiya models – as well as 74 missiles.
The drone and missile barrage killed 30 civilians and injured 91 more, prompting Zelensky to declare Friday a Day of Mourning.
