Deadliest month for civilians since 2022
Wednesday’s clashes reflect a broader pattern of intensifying violence already documented by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU), which reported that June 2026 was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since April 2022, with at least 293 people killed and 1,990 injured nationwide.
June’s death toll marked a 10% increase compared to May, when 282 civilians were killed and 1,794 injured, and a 37% rise compared with June 2025, when 249 were killed and 1,416 injured.
The mission said long-range missiles and drones remained the leading cause of civilian casualties, while short-range drone strikes near the front line caused the highest monthly toll from such weapons since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
