A special-purpose diving unit of the National Guard of Omega Special Purpose Center has developed its first unmanned surface vessel (USV), designed to support combat operations in southern Ukraine.
According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs on Sunday, the drone boat was developed by the unit’s engineers in cooperation with a civilian IT company.

The platform is intended to perform a range of combat missions, including launching first-person view (FPV) strike drones, intercepting aerial targets, supporting special operations by combat divers, and serving as a kamikaze attack craft.
“Our boat is, so to speak, a mother ship that carries FPV drones, which then fly on to destroy the enemy,” said the commander of Omega’s diving unit, known by the callsign Krava.
He added that future versions are expected to carry FPV interceptor drones capable of defending Ukraine’s coastline from Russian aerial threats.
“We want to protect the coast from the water so the enemy cannot reach the shoreline,” Krava said.
Designed from battlefield experience
According to Varyag, commander of the diving unit’s special-purpose unmanned systems group, the idea emerged during combat operations in the Zaporizhzhia sector, with the unit already employing FPV drones to strike Russian logistics and targets behind the front line. The new naval platform is intended to extend that reach by transporting drones closer to Russian positions before launch.

“That’s why we decided to create an unmanned surface vessel, so our presence would be felt even deeper in the enemy’s rear and our drones could fly even farther,” Varyag said.
Part of Ukraine’s growing naval drone program
The national guard says Omega’s unmanned systems teams operating in southern Ukraine have already destroyed numerous Russian targets, including military vehicles, armored equipment, fuel tankers, and electrical infrastructure.
Deputy commander of the diving unit Dart said integrating surface, underwater, and aerial unmanned systems is critical to maintaining Ukraine’s technological edge over Russia.
“Our goal is to ensure technology saves the lives of our fighters while increasing the effectiveness of eliminating the occupiers,” he said.
According to the interior ministry, the new USV is expected to improve support for both drone operators and combat divers during special operations.
The National Guard has not disclosed the vessel’s technical specifications or official name.
This follows the navy’s first public demonstration of the Barracuda system on July 14, when it showcased the drone boat attacking a Russian observation post before launching reconnaissance and FPV drones to identify targets for precision strikes.
The Navy said integrating multiple unmanned systems significantly improves battlefield awareness and strike capabilities.
Military intelligence has also revealed plans to equip future naval drones with capabilities to intercept and escort sanctioned vessels in the Black Sea, broadening their role from strike platforms to multi-purpose maritime systems capable of reconnaissance, air defense support, and maritime interdiction.
