“President Erdoğan and I discussed the Middle East and agreed on the need to ensure protection of civilians and respect for humanitarian law,” Zelenskyy reported on Friday evening on X (formerly Twitter).

In addition, the presidents discussed the next round of negotiations on the Peace Formula in Malta. “Turkey will take part, adding its authoritative voice and position,” Zelensky noted.

What can we say about Turkey? It tries to maintain good relations with both Ukraine and Russia. It is a not always reliable member of NATO. It controls access between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
It plays both ends against the middle and is a frustrating enigma.
