Kyiv said that Tuesday it struck the Russian missile system that had been used to launch a deadly strike in the center of Sumy on Sunday.

As people had begun to gather for religious services on Palm Sunday, April 13, Russian forces had launched a missile strike on the northern city, close to the border with Russia. Emergency services on Sunday night had said the missiles killed 35 people, including an 11-year-old and a 17-year-old, and wounded 117, 15 of them children.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) said Tuesday that it struck an “anti-aircraft missile system of the 448th missile brigade of the Russian army in the Kursk region.”

It said this was the same system responsible for the deadly strike on Sunday:

“Units of the Unmanned Systems Forces, the Special Operations Forces [SSO] of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine [SBU], in cooperation with other components of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, attacked a number of objects in the Kursk region related to war criminals involved in the missile strike on the city of Sumy on April 13, 2025 and other war crimes against the people of Ukraine,” the update states.

Ukrainian troops struck the “permanent deployment point of the 448th missile brigade” after which “a secondary detonation of ammunition was recorded,” the update says.

The report did not specify if the strike resulted in casualties, stating that “the results of the strike are being clarified.”

Ukrainian Forces Strike Volgograd Defense Plant and Targets in Occupied Crimea

The AFU has confirmed strikes on multiple Russian military and industrial targets, including the “Titan-Barrikady” enterprise in Volgograd and a “Pantsir-S1” air defense system in Crimea.

In the early hours on Tuesday, Ukraine launched over 100 drones toward Russia’s Kursk region, with local authorities reporting one dead and nine injured. It is unclear if the General Staff statement refers to the same attack.

Moscow’s attack on Palm Sunday has drawn widespread condemnation from Western nations.

US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, said on social media that the attack on civilian targets “crosses any line of decency.”

Trump called the deaths from the Palm Sunday attack a “horrible thing” but later shifted blame to his predecessor, Joe Biden, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky while meeting press alongside El Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele on Monday.

Democratic members of the US Congress have drafted a bill to ramp up support for Ukraine and impose tougher sanctions on Russia.
