WASHINGTON DC – US President Donald Trump said Friday morning that he thinks Ukraine and Russia are “coming along,” reiterating that peace was “pretty close.”
“No deadline... I just want to do it as fast as possible,” Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House as he departed for his first overseas trip to attend Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome.

The US President reiterated his optimism over Ukraine peace, saying that his envoy Steve Witkoff was meeting with Russia’s Vladimir Putin “right now as we speak.”
“We are going to try and get out of war so that we can save 5,000 people a week. And that’s what my aim is,” he said.
He went on to add: “I want to save 5,000 young men. They happen to be mostly Ukrainian, Russian – 5,000 young Ukrainian and Russian men. And that’s a big honor if I can do it.”
Trump and his aides have spoken positively about his peace deal over the past few days, however the White House has yet to publicly offer specifics on the plan.
Speaking to Kyiv Post, senior Trump administration officials did not rule out a potential meeting between the US and Ukrainian leaders while in Rome.
“Some kind of meeting between the leaders is highly likely, with a caveat that they will have limited time for it” one official said adding that “the format and cardiography” of potential meeting was “yet to be determined.”
The Illusion of a Peace Deal for Ukraine
Trump himself told reporters before departure to Rome that he was “going to meet with a lot of the foreign leaders they want to meet” without offering any names.
The US President is scheduled to return back to Washington Sunday night.
