Russia launched a missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region early Wednesday, May 7, killing two people and injuring seven others, including four children, according to Ukrainian officials.

Explosions were reported across the capital around 1 a.m. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the ballistic strike attacks and warned that more attacks could follow.

Just two minutes after air raid sirens sounded, Kyiv Post correspondents on the ground reported hearing a barrage of air defense missiles, followed by loud explosions.

The attacks come just hours after the Kremlin reiterated on Tuesday that it would stick to a three-day truce it proposed to coincide with World War II commemorations – which Ukraine has dismissed as nothing more than an attempt by Moscow to secure the safety of the Victory Day parade.

According to The State Emergency Service, falling debris from intercepted rockets sparked a fire in a warehouse complex in the Solomiansky district, covering an area of approximately 300 square meters (3230 square feet). Drone wreckage also landed in the district later, though it did not ignite.

The ballistic attack was followed by the drone barrage, targeting the capital from multiple directions. The State Emergency Service said the attack caused damage in four districts across Kyiv.

In Sviatoshynsky district, debris hit a nine-story residential building, igniting apartments on the upper floors. Five people were rescued, including four children. Three of the children suffered burns and were hospitalized.

Putin’s V-Day ceasefire

The Kremlin has announced a unilateral three-day truce, set to begin at 9 p.m. GMT on Wednesday, to coincide with its May 9 military parade on Red Square, marking 80 years since the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Among the 29 foreign leaders expected in Moscow for the event are China’s President Xi Jinping and Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The occasion has become Russia’s most significant public holiday under President Vladimir Putin.

Kyiv has dismissed Putin’s order for a temporary halt in attacks as a “manipulation” and “game” aimed at protecting his parade, rather than a genuine peace initiative.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, a proposal backed by US President Donald Trump and previously rejected by Putin.

On a state visit to Prague on Sunday, May 4, Zelensky reiterated he had no faith in Putin’s claim that he would adhere to a three-day truce coinciding with Moscow’s Victory Day parade on May 9.
