Keith Kellogg, the US special envoy for Ukraine, decried Russian attacks on Ukraine over the weekend as “shameful,” calling it “indiscriminate killing of women and children at night in their homes.”

Kellogg’s comments on Sunday came after Russia rained down hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles on Ukraine two nights in a row. Another attack ensued after Kellogg’s comments.

Kellogg, in an X update that marked one of the first responses to the renewed attacks from Washington, called the attack “a clear violation of the 1977 Geneva Peace Protocols designed to protect innocents” and reiterated Washington’s call for a ceasefire.

“This is Kyiv. The indiscriminate killing of women and children at night in their homes is a clear violation of the 1977 Geneva Peace Protocols designed to protect innocents. These attacks are shameful. Stop the killing. Ceasefire now,” Kellogg wrote, attaching a photo of the city’s crimson skyline ablaze after the attacks.

US President Donald Trump also posted a Truth Social update on Monday morning – shortly after Moscow launched drones on Ukraine for the third night in a row – where he said Russian leader Vladimir Putin “has gone absolutely CRAZY.”

“He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever,” Trump wrote, before once again blaming Moscow’s invasion on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his predecessor Joe Biden.

The Striker drone belongs to the growing class of so-called deep-strike drones designed to hit high-value targets far behind enemy lines.

The EU’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas on Sunday also condemned the strikes, calling for more sanctions to pressure Moscow into a ceasefire.

“Last night’s attacks again show Russia bent on more suffering and the annihilation of Ukraine. Devastating to see children among innocent victims harmed and killed. My thoughts are with the families today,” she wrote on X.

“We need the strongest international pressure on Russia to stop this war.”

Europe and Kyiv – with Trump’s blessing – had issued a ceasefire ultimatum to Moscow in early May with threats of intensified sanctions. Putin responded by first proposing direct talks with Kyiv in Istanbul, then a memorandum towards a ceasefire during a subsequent phone call with Trump, neither of which resulted in a ceasefire as proposed.

Europe issued additional sanctions and vowed more after Moscow rejected the ceasefire, but Trump declined to impose additional sanctions by saying he will “see how Russia behaves.”

David Lammy, the UK’s foreign secretary, said on Saturday that Putin’s latest attacks “are not the actions of a country seeking peace.”

“Another night of terror for Ukrainian civilians, with yet more injured and more homes destroyed,” he wrote on X. “These are not the actions of a country seeking peace.”
