A Russian missile struck a Ukrainian Ground Forces training unit in the Poltava region on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 4.

The ground forces confirmed the attack in a statement on Telegram, saying that timely security measures had helped to avert mass casualties.

“Thanks to timely and carefully thought-out security measures... we managed to avoid the worst,” the statement read.

The military credited the successful dispersal of personnel, use of shelters, and strict adherence to protocols during the air raid alert for saving the lives of troops present at the site.

“Unfortunately, there are wounded. All of them are receiving qualified medical assistance in specialized facilities. Doctors are doing everything possible to ensure their recovery,” the statement added.

A special commission has been formed to investigate the circumstances of the strike and assess the damage. The findings will be released upon the completion of the inquiry.

“This incident once again underscores the importance of constant vigilance, strict adherence to safety protocols, and readiness for any scenario amid ongoing Russian aggression,” the ground forces said.

Earlier on Wednesday, explosions were heard in Poltava during an air raid. The Poltava Regional Military Administration confirmed that a missile strike had hit a training unit within the Poltava community.

At the time, soldiers were present at the training site conducting exercises.

Rutte Calls Ramstein Meeting a ‘Window of Opportunity’ for Ukraine

NATO’s chief Mark Rutte hailed a “window of opportunity” for Ukraine at a Ramstein-format meeting in Brussels on Thursday, with roughly a third of NATO members plus Australia now paying into a joint fund for US-made equipment for Kyiv.

As previously reported by Kyiv Post, a June 1 Russian missile strike on another Ukrainian Land Forces training site killed 12 and wounded more than 60.

The commander of Ukraine’s Ground Forces, Mykhailo Drapaty, unexpectedly resigned on June 1, taking full responsibility for a Russian missile strike on a military training center.

In a public Facebook post, Drapaty wrote:

“I have decided to step down as commander of the ground forces. I was unable to make people follow my orders. I didn’t push hard enough or change attitudes toward discipline. This is my responsibility.”

The missile hit the 239th training center the same day, causing heavy casualties despite most soldiers reportedly being in shelters.

However, just two days later, on June 3, Drapaty was appointed head of Ukraine’s Joint Forces after meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky. He said he was asked to remain in service and has now taken on a new role.
