On the morning of June 9, Ukrainian drones targeted Cheboksary, the capital of Russia’s Chuvash Republic. Kyiv’s General Staff confirmed that its Unmanned Systems Forces, together with other Defense Forces units, struck the Russian enterprise “VNIIR-Progress” – a facility that manufactures components for Shahed-type drones. The plant is located more than 1,000 kilometers (625 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

“A defense-industrial facility producing antennas for Shaheds was hit. At least two UAVs struck the target, causing a large-scale fire. The results of the strike are being clarified,” the General Staff said in a statement Monday morning.
The attack was carried out as part of efforts to “reduce the enemy’s capability to produce means of aerial attack,” the statement added.
The targeted facility is part of Russia’s military-industrial complex and produces navigation equipment. Specifically, it manufactures the Kometa antennas used to defeat electronic warfare systems from disrupting Shahed-type strike drones and glide bombs (KABs) using the so-called unified planning and correction modules (UMPK), and other precision weaponry.

“Strikes on facilities that support the Russian Federation’s armed aggression will continue until it is completely stopped,” the statement added.
Throughout the night, Russian social media reported explosions in the area where, in addition, Russian authorities imposed temporary flight restrictions at four airports in Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, and Tambov.
The pro-Russian “Shot” Telegram channel reported that thick black smoke was seen rising above Cheboksary and published video of a drone strike said to be at the site.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that its air defense systems destroyed and intercepted 49 Ukrainian drones overnight: 13 over both the Kursk and Nizhny Novgorod regions, nine each over Voronezh and Oryol, two over Bryansk, two over Chuvashia, and one over the Belgorod region.
