Ukraine has recovered the bodies of another 1,000 fallen Ukrainian soldiers formerly held by Russia.
“According to the Russian side, the bodies belong to Ukrainian citizens, including servicemen. All necessary forensic examinations and identification procedures will be carried out by law enforcement investigators in cooperation with Interior Ministry experts,” the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said in a statement on Thursday, July 17.

The return of the bodies was made possible through the joint efforts of the Coordination Headquarters, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, the State Emergency Service, and other institutions within the national security and defense sector.
Special thanks were extended to the International Committee of the Red Cross for its assistance, as well as to the Ukrainian military personnel who ensured the transportation of the repatriated bodies and their handover to designated state forensic and law enforcement agencies.
Last month Russia transferred the bodies of 1,245 Ukrainians to Ukraine.
During the second round of talks in Istanbul, Ukraine and Russia agreed to a “6,000-for-6,000” formula for the exchange of bodies, a number which had reportedly already been reached last month.
