Ukraine will launch a grant scheme for ammunition and explosives production as the country looks to rapidly boost the domestic defense industry in the coming months.

Last week, the new government approved plans to expand domestic arms production to meet half the country’s weapons needs within six months.

“Currently, about 40% of the weapons in the hands of our warriors are made in Ukraine. In six months, it should be no less than 50%,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told MPs.

On Sunday, new Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced the funding initiative on social media.

“This is about supporting the defense industry and localizing critical manufacturing. More details will follow after the government’s decision,” she wrote on Facebook.

The project will be coordinated by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov and Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal.

Svyrydenko has previously said Ukraine is planning to sign an agreement with the United States on drone cooperation. Ukraine has developed its own long-range drones which it uses to strike deep inside Russia.

The president and government’s push comes as uncertainty grows about how many more weapons shipments Western countries can provide – and how quickly.
