President Volodymyr Zelensky announced he had visited frontline positions in eastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, which borders Russia, meeting troops and presenting state awards to some on Monday.

Zelensky’s visit coincided with a reported Russian attempt to breach the Hoptivka checkpoint in the region that morning.

Publicizing his visit on X, Zelensky said he visited medical facilities treating the wounded and met representatives of multiple brigades.

His visit was to “… one of the medical institutions in Kharkiv where our warriors are undergoing treatment and rehabilitation after being wounded,” Zelensky wrote

“I spoke with defenders who fought for Ukraine in various sectors – Pokrovsk, Vovchansk, and Kupyansk. I presented them with state awards. I thanked them for their service and for defending our country. We are proud to have such strong warriors,” he added, also acknowledging the work of combat medics.

Zelensky also said he met with troops defending Vovchansk, a city that witnessed intense fighting in late 2024

He said he discussed logistics and equipment procurement with the troops – as well as Russia’s use of foreign fighters, to which he vowed to “respond.”

“We spoke with commanders about the frontline situation, the defense of Vovchansk, and the dynamics of the battles. We also specifically addressed the issues of drone supply and deployment, recruitment, and direct funding for the brigades,” Zelensky wrote in another update

Putin Signals Shift on Ukraine Talks, Revives Istanbul Framework

Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin says Russia is ready for talks with Ukraine based on the earlier Istanbul framework, even as he labels Kyiv’s leadership “neo-Nazi” and rejects current terms.

“Our warriors in this sector are reporting the participation of mercenaries from China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and African countries in the war. We will respond,” he added.

Zelensky later said he also visited troops defending the Lyptsi front close to the Russian border, where soldiers supposedly raised issues regarding the points system for Russian equipment destroyed.

“I met with the warriors of the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade named after Ivan Sirko,” Zelensky wrote.  “The fighters are holding a difficult section of the front – Lyptsi. I spoke with the commanders. The defense along their line of responsibility, the training of the warriors, their morale, and the provision of essential supplies to the units – all of this remains a key focus.”

“We discussed positive feedback on the electronic system for tracking points awarded for the destruction of the occupiers and their equipment. We will address and resolve all the issues discussed,” he added. He also presented state awards to some troops in that sector.

In response to Ukraine having recaptured much of the Kharkiv region in a surprise counteroffensive in late 2022, Russia renewed its assault in mid-2024, making limited gains. Following Kyiv’s successful defense, Moscow launched another offensive in the summer of 2025.

Kharkiv, the regional capital, remains a frequent target of Russian drone, guided aerial bombs, and missile attacks more than three years into Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with its proximity to the border leaving residents little time to seek shelter.
