[UPDATED: Sept. 22, 2:47 pm , Kyiv time. Updated with report from the State Emergency Service on the completion of emergency and rescue operations]

Russia launched a series of strikes on Ukraine overnight, using attack drones and guided aerial bombs (KAB), resulting in casualties and significant damage to infrastructure.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, since the evening of Sunday, Sept. 21, Russian forces launched Shahed drones across the country, with Kyiv and Sumy regions the most affected.

On Monday morning, Sept. 22, Russian troops also struck Zaporizhzhia five times with aerial bombs.

As of 02:00, air defenses were active in Kyiv. A strike in the Boryspil district caused fires in private homes and a three-story residential building, injuring one person.

The Vyshhorod and Fastiv districts also came under attack, sparking additional fires, while in the Obukhiv district, UAV debris hit an uninhabited multi-story building.

In Zaporizhzhia, Russian troops targeted a civilian infrastructure facility. Several cars were destroyed or damaged. Local officials said five KABs were used in the attack, with initial reports indicating two fatalities.

The State Emergency Service (DSNS) later clarified that the death toll had risen to three, with two more people injured.

“Emergency responders unblocked the body of a woman at the site of a destroyed private residential building,” the report said.

Rescuers also extinguished a fire that broke out in a two-story building and five cars after a strike on a parking lot.

“All emergency services are working at the scene, including pyrotechnicians inspecting the impact area and a medical team from the SES. Emergency rescue operations are ongoing,” the report added.

‘You Will Be Left to Suffer and Die’: Rutte Warns Young Russians Against Fighting in Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte issued a stark appeal to young Russians not to fight in the war in Ukraine, saying they will be sent to the front with poor training, bad equipment and a high chance of being killed, wounded or abandoned. He backed his warning with NATO estimates that Russia is losing more than 30,000 soldiers a month – more in a single month than the Soviet Union lost during its entire 10-year war in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

The overnight strikes damaged 15 apartment buildings, 10 private homes, and several non-residential premises.

“Specialists from district administrations are already inspecting the territory to document the damage. Municipal services have already begun boarding up broken windows in residential buildings,” said Ivan Fedorov, head of the region.

Emergency and rescue operations have been completed in Zaporizhzhia after a massive Russian airstrike, with the confirmed death toll now at three - two women and one man.

According to the DSNS:

“Three people died: two women aged 40 and 79, and a 77-year-old man. In addition, a 20-year-old and a 17-year-old boy sustained injuries of varying severity and were hospitalized.”

The report added that a Russian air bomb destroyed a private residential building and damaged nearby structures.

“Firefighters extinguished a fire in a two-story building and five cars,” the rescue service said.

All emergency services in the city were involved in responding to the aftermath of the Russian strike.

In the Sumy region, Russian drones struck one of the districts. According to the regional military administration (OVA), emergency services are on the scene and assessing the damage.

Acting Mayor of Sumy Artem Kobzar reported that one person was injured. Two strikes hit industrial facilities, and another struck an educational institution, shattering windows in nearby apartment buildings and damaging balconies.
