President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia “will receive a response” after launching a massive overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv on Thursday, July 2.

According to local outlet RBC-Ukraine, Zelensky made the remarks while visiting a destroyed residential building in the capital’s Darnytskyi district that was practically leveled during the air raid.

“Russia will receive a response for today’s strike on Kyiv – without a doubt,” Zelensky said.

Russia launched one of its largest combined aerial attacks against Ukraine overnight, with Kyiv as the primary target.

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia fired 570 aerial weapons, including 496 attack and decoy drones and 74 missiles of various types. The barrage included ballistic, cruise and sea-launched missiles alongside hundreds of long-range strike drones.

The attack caused widespread destruction across the capital. Ukrainian officials reported damage at more than 30 locations, with civilian infrastructure hit in seven districts of Kyiv. Residential buildings were among the sites directly struck.

At least 25 people were killed and more than 56 others injured, according to Ukrainian authorities, while rescue teams continued searching for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

Rescue operations continue

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS) released photographs showing firefighters battling large blazes at apartment buildings, private homes and warehouse facilities damaged during the attack.

Russia's combined drone and ballistic missile attack on the night of July 2 destroyed electronics retailer Moyo's warehouse and damaged ERC, Porsche Center Kyiv Airport, Agromat, and CityHotel Residence.

In Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, a three-story non-residential building housing an emergency medical services substation caught fire following the strike.

The overnight bombardment also damaged energy infrastructure, leaving parts of Kyiv without electricity as repair crews worked to restore power.
