In a social media post over the weekend, US President Donald Trump calls his 2019 impeachment an “illegal hoax,” and is going after the Senator who chaired the proceedings.

Trump posted to his own social media platform this weekend that his 2019 impeachment over his pressure on Kyiv officials to hand over information on the family of his political opponent, Joe Biden, was “a far bigger illegal hoax than Watergate,” referencing the legal congressional proceedings that ended with then-President Richard Nixon resigning in 1974.

“The Ukraine impeachment (of me!) scam was a far bigger illegal hoax than Watergate. I sincerely hope the necessary authorities, including Congress, are looking into this!

“Adam ‘Schiffty’ Schiff was so dishonest and corrupt. So many laws and protocols were violated, and just plain broken!” Trump wrote.

Schiff, now a Democratic Senator from California, who was a House of Representatives member and chair of the successful 2019 Trump impeachment, is widely believed to be the next target of what has been called Trump’s “retribution tour.”

Trump has had his Department of Justice hand out indictments to New York Attorney General Letitia James, who successfully prosecuted Trump for felony cases of fraud, and James Comey, the former FBI director who served during an investigation into the Trump team’s dealings with Moscow.

Trump Called Netanyahu ‘F**king Crazy’ Over Lebanon Escalation – Axios

Trump reportedly confronted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a heated phone call on Monday over Israel’s military operations in Lebanon, according to Axios. Trump allegedly warned that further escalation could isolate Israel internationally and jeopardize ongoing negotiations with Iran.

The 2019 impeachment during Trump’s first term was initiated by Congress, including the House Intelligence Committee, chaired by Schiff. The president was accused of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress following a phone call with Volodymyr Zelensky. The House of Representatives voted to impeach, but the Republican-controlled Senate acquitted Trump.

“We will not be intimidated,” Schiff wrote in a post on X on Sunday. “We will not be deterred. We will do our jobs and continue fighting back against these attempts at retribution.”

Watergate was the pivotal 1970s US political scandal that led to Republican President Richard Nixon’s resignation to avoid impeachment, as recommended by his party’s Senators.

The Republican Senate leadership told him in the Oval Office they would vote to convict the President in a Senate trial to follow the likely successful House impeachment, after it was revealed Nixon ordered the illegal surveillance of political opponents at the Democratic Party offices at the Watergate hotel and obstructed Congressional investigation efforts.

Many Nixon administration staff members served time as felons in Federal prison for their involvement in the incident and the ensuing attempted cover-up.
