British media on Sunday sounded the alarm that Russian hackers broke into UK Ministry of Defense data systems, making off with sensitive data about military personnel and other information from Royal Air Force and Royal Navy bases.
Some 272,000 service members may have been affected.

Specifically, the Mail on Sunday reported, cybercriminals hacked the files of a maintenance and construction contractor, Dodd Group, gaining temporary access to its mainframe via ransomware.
“We can confirm that the Dodd Group recently experienced a ransomware incident whereby an unauthorized third-party gained temporary access to part of our internal systems,” a Dodd Group spokesperson said. “While our forensic investigation is ongoing, we are aware of claims that data taken from our systems have been published online.”
The London media outlet reported that personal data of service personnel and veterans (names, bank details and some addresses in the payroll system.
The British Ministry of Defense said it was investigating the incident.
“We are actively investigating claims that information relating to the MoD has been published on the Dark Web,” a Ministry spokesman said. “To safeguard sensitive operational information, we will not comment any further on the details.”
The Daily Mail noted that the nefariously acquired documents reportedly hold information about a number of sensitive bases, including RAF Lakenheath, where the US Air Force’s new-generation F-35 jets are based.

The hack follows a series of high-profile data breaches at the Ministry, the Daily Mail continued, recounting an incident when London “covertly” set up the Afghanistan Response Route for people in the country whose details were leaked inadvertently by a defense official in February 2022.
