Some of the phrases in the peace proposal drafted by the US and Russia appear to have been originally written in Russian, a journalist has speculated.

Luke Harding, writing for The Guardian, highlighted aspects of the leaked draft which appear to sound unnatural in English but would work as direct translations from Russian.

Harding highlighted the third clause, which reads “it is expected that Russia will not invade neighbouring countries and NATO will not expand further.”

While the passive construction of “it is expected” sounds unwieldy in English, its equivalent in Russian – ожидается or ozhidayetsya – fits in the sentence and is a familiar verb form.

Harding also posited that “ambiguities” – from the second clause, reading “all ambiguities of the last 30 years will be considered settled” – as well as “enshrine” –from the clause “Ukraine agrees to enshrine in its constitution that it will not join NATO” – could both be Russianisms.

These two words would correspond to the Russian “неоднозначности” (neodnoznachnosti) and “закрепить” (zakrepit’) respectively.

Another section of the proposal refers to occupied regions of Ukraine as “the new territory.”

The settlement is said to have been drafted by Russian economic envoy Kirill Dmitriev along with US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff over the course of several weeks of closed-door clandestine talks.

UN Security Council to Convene on Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra Strike

The UN Security Council will meet on Monday to address Russia’s latest strikes on cultural and religious sites, including the attack on Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

It has been described by Kyiv and its European allies as a near-total concession to Moscow’s maximalist demands.

On Friday, President Volodymyr Zelensky said accepting the points would be tantamount to “a life without freedom, without dignity, without justice.”
