Russia Hits Cities Across Ukraine, Injuring Kids, Damaging Port Infrastructure

Russia launched a large-scale overnight drone attack across several Ukrainian regions early Friday, striking civilian and port infrastructure in Odesa, hitting central Sumy, and targeting communities in Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions.

Early on Feb. 27, Russian forces attacked civilian and port infrastructure in the Odesa region with strike drones, injuring two people.

Odesa Regional Military Administration head (OVA) Oleh Kiper said on Telegram:

“The enemy attacked civilian and port infrastructure in the Odesa region with strike drones. Unfortunately, two people were injured – a 3.5-year-old girl and a 44-year-old man. Both were hospitalized in moderate condition.”

According to regional authorities, port fuel tanks and a construction crane were damaged, along with the facade and windows of a residential building, vehicles and a medical facility. A kindergarten building was destroyed. Emergency and utility services are continuing work at the scene.

In Sumy, Russian forces struck the city center at around 4 a.m., hitting a hotel. The State Emergency Service (DSNS) said a second strike followed while firefighters were extinguishing the blaze. Rescuers evacuated 50 people. No emergency personnel were injured, and the fire was quickly contained.

In the Zaporizhzhia district, a massive drone attack on a settlement left four people injured, including a teenager.

In the Kharkiv region’s Kupiansk district, a strike drone hit a residential building in the private sector overnight, completely destroying it. Rescuers recovered the body of a man from under the rubble, and a woman was injured. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.

According to the Air Force, Russia launched 187 strike drones – including Shahed, Gerbera and Italmas types – and other unmanned aerial vehicles since the evening of Feb. 26. About 120 of them were Shahed drones.

As of 8:30 a.m., Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 165 drones across the north, south and east of the country. At the same time, 20 drones were reported to have struck 14 locations.
