An unnamed foreign national is set to go on trial in Ukraine’s Zhytomyr after being extradited from Germany for a failed armed robbery attempt in 2019.
In a Monday press release, the Zhytomyr Region Prosecutor’s Office said the suspect, along with his accomplice, “committed a robbery attack on police officers of the Security Police Department in Zhytomyr with the aim of seizing money” in September 2019.

The agency said the two planned the heist and were disguised as law enforcement officers from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), where they injured a police officer and seized a service weapon, but ultimately went empty-handed as they nabbed a black bag thought to have contained cash.
“The men developed a plan – they researched the security guard’s route, their weapons, and the time they would collect the proceeds from the local store,” the press release says.
“During the attack, they injured one of the police officers, seized a service firearm, and took a black bag from the collection vehicle, which, however, turned out to be without money, but with the law enforcement officer’s personal belongings.”
The man, whose nationality was not disclosed, went into hiding and was eventually apprehended in Germany and extradited to Ukraine on Oct. 2015.
At the time, the man was charged with robbery committed by prior conspiracy by a group or by a repeat offender, possession and trafficking of firearms, and encroachment on the life of a law enforcement officer, according to state media Ukrinform.
