The European Union is preparing an initiative to help facilitate Ukrainian assistance to Middle Eastern countries seeking protection from Iranian drone attacks, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Monday, March 9.

The proposal comes after the outbreak of the US-Israeli war with Iran, which has triggered waves of missile and drone attacks across parts of the Middle East.

“In response to the demand for drone interceptors, we are preparing a new initiative to become a mediator between Ukraine’s industrial production and the military needs of Middle Eastern countries,” Kallas said at the EU Ambassadors Conference, according to France 24.

She said the initiative would connect Ukraine’s rapidly developing defense industry – particularly its drone-interception technologies – with countries in the region facing growing aerial threats.

Ukraine has offered assistance to the US and several Gulf states, which are bearing the brunt of Iran’s retaliatory attacks – citing its four years of experience countering Iranian-designed drones used extensively by Russia during its full-scale invasion.

Kyiv has developed a range of relatively inexpensive interceptor drones and other counter-drone technologies that officials say have helped Ukraine neutralize large numbers of incoming attack drones.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainian drone specialists would travel to the region to assess how Kyiv’s experience defending against drone attacks could help protect allied infrastructure and military facilities.

Hungary’s Veto on Ukraine Remains, Just Moved Down the Road

Hungary and Ukraine have reached a comprehensive agreement restoring linguistic, educational, and cultural rights to roughly 100,000 ethnic Hungarians in the Zakarpattia region. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that Budapest will conditionally support opening Ukraine’s first EU negotiating cluster once these measures are codified into Ukrainian law. While this milestone unblocks a two-year political stalemate and pocketed €16.4 billion in un-frozen EU funds for Budapest, it defers rather than eliminates Hungary’s veto power.

In an interview published on Monday, Zelensky announced that Ukraine has already sent interceptor drones and a team of drone experts to help protect US military bases in Jordan

Kyiv has also suggested that Gulf countries could consider exchanging air defense missiles for Ukrainian drone-interception technology, as Ukraine faces shortages of advanced Patriot interceptor missiles needed to counter Russian ballistic attacks.
