A US Army general in charge of coordinating assistance for Ukraine left classified maps on a train in Poland and “lost control” of the documents for 24 hours, a US government watchdog has found.
An investigation by the US Department of Defense’s Office of Inspector General found that now-retired Major General Antonio A. Aguto Jr. had improperly handled the maps while returning from a trip to Ukraine on April 4, 2024.

Aguto, who was the commander of the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine helping train and support Ukraine’s armed forces, said that the maps were not secured because they were too big to wrap.
The classified maps were recovered by staff from the US embassy in Ukraine a day after the general’s trip, once the train returned to Ukraine, with the report adding that Aguto accepted responsibility for the incident.
The investigation also found that Aguto suffered a concussion during his service in Ukraine after falling over during a drink-filled dinner, with the injury leading to the general’s “inability to perform his duties” on May 14, 2024.
