The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) detained several officials from a district military enlistment office and a local member of the national police, in Odesa, on Tuesday, April 21, following an incident that local media said involved a chase and gunfire.

The detentions were confirmed to Suspilne by the regional enlistment office, which said the incident involved personnel from one of Odesa’s territorial recruitment and social support centers (TCC), basically an enlisted personnel induction center.

The head of the Odesa regional enlistment office and the chief of the Peresypskyi district office were suspended from duty following the detentions, Ukraine’s Ground Forces said.

According to Suspilne, citing sources in the SBU, eight representatives of the TCC and one police officer were detained. Authorities have not yet officially disclosed the reasons for the arrests.

Earlier, local outlet Dumskaya reported that the incident occurred on Balkivska Street and involved a pursuit and gunfire during what it described as an SBU operation.

Dumskaya, citing unnamed sources, reported that the detained individuals were allegedly involved in attempting to extort tens of thousands of dollars from a man who had legal grounds for deferment from military service. The outlet also reported that the man had contacted the SBU in advance, which led to a coordinated operation.

These details have not been independently confirmed by Ukrainian authorities.

Kyiv Court Closes Treason Case Against NABU Detective Viktor Husarov

A Kyiv court has closed a criminal case against National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) Detective Viktor Husarov, dropping treason charges and releasing him from liability over unauthorized handling of information due to the expiry of the statute of limitations. Prosecutors said Husarov admitted guilt and agreed to be freed from criminal liability on limitation grounds, which do not clear him of wrongdoing.

Dumskaya also reported, citing a separate source, that the detained group may have been involved in similar incidents previously and allegedly operated in coordination with police officers in targeting individuals.

The outlet added that a district police officer from Odesa’s Suvorovskyi district was among those detained. According to its sources, the alleged victim had contacted the SBU in advance, which led to a special operation involving a pursuit and reported gunfire.

The SBU has not yet issued an official statement. Odesa’s regional enlistment office said additional information would be provided after clarification of the circumstances.
