Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) have delivered a massive blow to the Russian military’s strategic aviation and ballistic missile capabilities, executing a successful drone raid against a military airfield in the city of Taganrog, Rostov region.

Strategic aircraft and ballistic launchers eliminated

USF Commander Robert “Madyar” Brovdi officially announced the results of the mission on Facebook, releasing combat surveillance footage documenting the terminal impacts. According to the command’s assessment, the drone strikes achieved total destruction of three high-priority targets situated on the airfield’s tarmac and outer perimeters.

Brovdi noted that the Tu-142 is a specialized, long-range maritime anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and reconnaissance platform built heavily upon the airframe design of Russia’s Tu-95 strategic bomber. Eliminating two of these large assets represents a significant, hard-to-replace loss for Russia’s naval aviation fleet.

The raid also successfully targeted and wiped out a Russian Iskander operational-tactical missile system. The mobile platform, which is routinely used to launch surface-to-surface ballistic and cruise missiles into Ukrainian civilian and military infrastructure, was hunted down and destroyed directly at its active firing position on the outskirts of Taganrog.

“The USF birds destroyed an Iskander and 2 Tu-142 aircraft at the military airfield in Taganrog, Russian Federation, on the night of May 30,” Commander Brovdi reported.

Ukrainian drone strikes have knocked out about a quarter of Russia’s refining capacity.

He hinted that the overall damage toll inside the military zone exceeds the initial list of targets, adding that Ukrainian munitions also heavily impacted local waterside infrastructure.

“The result was not limited to the list of targets detailed above; it also lit up beautifully in the waters. Video to follow.”

A coordinated saturation campaign

The surgical strike on the Taganrog airfield was deeply synchronized with a wider drone offensive that tested the limits of regional air defense nets across western and southern Russia. Independent tracking data verified by the Russian outlet ASTRA confirmed that a parallel swarm of Ukrainian loitering munitions successfully breached electronic warfare shields in Taganrog’s commercial harbor the night of Friday-Saturday.

According to an emergency statement by Rostov Oblast Governor Yuri Slyusar, those drone impacts triggered a chain of large-scale fires across the port’s industrial zone, setting ablaze a commercial oil tanker moored at the docks, a specialized bulk fuel storage reservoir, and a port administrative building. A separate wing of the Ukrainian drone wave simultaneously struck an oil depot operated by the Southern Oil Company in Armavir, Krasnodar Krai, igniting a large fuel tank farm.

By forcing Russian air defense command loops to split their attention between defending critical economic assets like the Taganrog port and the Volgograd oil refineries, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces successfully cleared a path for their strike assets to bypass terminal defenses and eliminate Russia’s heavy strategic aircraft directly on the tarmac.
