Massive Russian Strike Damages DTEK Energy Facilities in Kyiv

Russian drone and missile strikes damaged energy operator DTEK’s facilities in Kyiv on Thursday morning, leaving part of the capital without electricity.

Repair crews were dispatched to the affected sites immediately after security conditions allowed, DTEK said on its official Telegram channel.

“We are doing everything possible to restore electricity to all residents of the capital as quickly as possible,” the company wrote.

DTEK did not publish the facilities’ location or the severity of the damage.

The company also thanked Ukraine’s air defense units and rescuers from the State Emergency Service (DSNS), saying energy workers and emergency responders were working “shoulder to shoulder” to deal with the consequences of the attack.

Russia launched a major aerial assault on Kyiv that killed at least 17 people and injured more than 56 others, according to Ukrainian officials.

At the time of publication, search-and-rescue operations are still underway, with authorities warning the death toll could continue to rise as rescuers search collapsed buildings for survivors.

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia launched 570 aerial weapons during the overnight attack, including 496 attack and decoy drones and 74 missiles.

The barrage included Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, Banderol, and Parodiya drones, as well as 24 Iskander-M ballistic missiles, 34 Kh-101 cruise missiles, 8 Kalibr cruise missiles, 4 Tsirkon hypersonic missiles, and 4 Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the assault as a “furious enemy attack,” urging residents to remain in shelters as air raid alerts lasted for hours and explosions echoed across the capital.

The attack came hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian intelligence had detected preparations for another massive Russian strike against Ukraine.

According to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, Kyiv sustained the heaviest damage during the overnight barrage.

More than 20 residential buildings and a medical facility were damaged across several districts of the capital, while emergency crews responded to 15 separate impact sites.

In the Darnytskyi district, part of a nine-story apartment building collapsed after being struck.

Klitschko has declared Friday, July 3, a day of mourning for the Ukrainian capital.
