US President Donald Trump on Thursday accused China of interfering in the 2020 presidential election during a prime-time televised address from the White House, reviving claims about his loss to former president Joe Biden.

In the roughly 25-minute speech, Trump alleged that China had interfered in the election and argued that the US electoral system falls “catastrophically” short of standards of fairness and trust.

He also claimed that American elections remain vulnerable to foreign interference, however the allegations have not been independently verified.

Democrats and other critics accused Trump of attempting to undermine confidence in the electoral process and of laying the groundwork to challenge the outcome of the congressional midterm elections later this year.

According to opponents, Trump was seeking to create confusion and spread misinformation rather than present new evidence.

Due to lack of evidence, major US television networks were split over whether to broadcast the speech live.

CNN, ABC, and NBC declined to air the address in real time, while CBS, Fox News, and MS Now broadcasted all or significant portions of Trump’s remarks.

2023 impeachment

Donald Trump was indicted in 2023 over efforts to upend the results of the 2020 US election – the most serious legal threat made to the current president.

The indictment, brought by special counsel Jack Smith, accused Trump of conspiracy to defraud the US and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding – the January 6, 2021 joint session of Congress held to certify Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory.

Zelensky said Fedorov’s dismissal stemmed from problems in coordination between the defense ministry and Ukraine’s military leadership.

Trump was also accused in the 45-page indictment of seeking to disenfranchise American voters with his false claims that he won the November 2020 presidential election.

“The purpose of the conspiracy was to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election by using knowingly false claims of election fraud,” the indictment said.

As a result, Trump was impeached by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives for seeking political kompromat on Biden from Ukraine and over the events of January 6, but was acquitted by the Senate both times.
