Iranian drones and missiles struck near an airport in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave on Thursday, March 5, injuring two people, Azerbaijani officials said.
A source close to Azerbaijan’s government told Reuters that several missiles and drones flying from the direction of Iran fell on the territory of Nakhchivan International Airport, located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the Iranian border.

Video footage shared by a source close to the government showed black smoke rising near the airport terminal. Reuters said it could not independently verify the footage.
Euronews, citing its sources, reported that the drones involved in the attack were Iranian, adding that three targeted the passenger terminal of Razi Airport in Nakhchivan.
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry later confirmed that drones had entered Azerbaijani territory from Iran and said two people were injured in the incident. The ministry also said it summoned Iran’s ambassador to Baku, Mojtaba Demirchilou, and issued a formal protest note.
Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry strongly condemned the drone attacks and said the country was preparing a response. In a statement, the ministry said Iranian forces launched drones from Iranian territory targeting Nakhchivan International Airport and other civilian infrastructure, adding that “these acts of aggression will not go unanswered.”
Officials said Azerbaijan reserves the right to take appropriate measures to protect its sovereignty and civilian infrastructure.
