- In the last four days, Russia has highly likely redeployed up to several battalions to reinforce the Bakhmut sector.
- This follows Ukrainian tactical gains on the flanks of the contested Donetsk Oblast town through mid-May and publicly aired doubts about the commitment of Wagner Group forces to continue fighting in the sector.
- With Russia likely maintaining relatively few uncommitted combat units in Ukraine, the redeployment represents a notable commitment by the Russian command.
- Russia’s leadership likely continue to see capturing Bakhmut as the key immediate war aim which would allow them to claim some degree of success in the conflict.

According to Serhiy Cherevatyi, spokesman for the Eastern Group of Forces, "Over the past day, 17 firefights took place in the Bakhmut direction, in which the enemy had 92 of their soldiers killed and 156 wounded. Also, two enemy infantry vehicles, five artillery installations, a Gvozdika self-propelled howitzer, five unmanned aerial vehicles, and 13 ammunition depots were destroyed," He emphasized that Bakhmut remains the priority target for the aggressor.
"The defense operation of the Ukrainian troops continues, the fortress of Bakhmut stands. Yes, for Ukraine it is worth great efforts, heroic efforts of our defenders, but the fact that the enemy is forced to redeploy additional reserves to continue the operation on Bakhmut, in general, indicates the failure of their offensive operations," Andriy Yusov, Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
