US President Donald Trump said lowering oil prices could have stopped Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Trump also reiterated his blame on his predecessor Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for failing to stop Moscow’s invasion.

Trump made the comments at a White House meeting with El Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele on Monday, April 14, when a reporter asked Trump to elaborate on the “mistake” he said a day prior while describing Mocow’s Palm Sunday attack on Ukraine’s Sumy that killed dozens, and whether Trump has given Putin a “deadline to actually move toward a ceasefire.”

Trump started his answer by reiterating his blame on Biden and Zelensky,

“The mistake was letting the war happen. If Biden were competent, and if Zelensky were competent… we had a rough session with this guy over here. He just kept asking for more and more,” Trump said, gesturing to Bukele while referring to his infamous clash with Zelensky in the same location on Feb. 28.

He then reiterated that the war would not have happened if he had been elected, describing the election – in which he lost to Biden – as “rigged.”

“There was no way that war should have been allowed to happen, and Biden should have stopped it… you take a look at Putin – I’m not saying anybody’s an angel, but I will tell you: I went four years and it wasn’t even a question,” Trump added.

Russia has deployed an S-400 air defense position less than 10 kilometers from the Kremlin, next to a science center linked to Vladimir Putin’s daughter.

He then suggested that lowering oil prices could have prevented Putin from launching the 2022 full-scale invasion.

“All you had to do is lower oil prices. If you lowered oil prices… Biden kept the prices so high because he made it impossible to get it,” Trump said, without elaborating how exactly lowering oil prices could have prevented the invasion.

Trump went on to say, again, that Biden and Zelensky could have stopped Putin’s invasion and added that Putin should not have started it, reiterating multiple times that it would not have happened if he were president.

“That’s a war that should have never been allowed to start. And Biden could have stopped it, and Zelensky could have stopped it, and Putin should have never started it,” he said, without answering whether he has presented Putin with a deadline toward a ceasefire, as per the reporter’s original question.

“Everybody’s to blame,” he added.
